The Bloody Elbow staff has made its own predictions for UFC 234, and it’s a clean sweep for Robert Whittaker to shield his middleweight title by beating Kelvin Gastelum, whilst everybody is backing Israel Adesanya over Anderson Silva in the co-main event. To put it differently, congrats to Gastelum and Silva in their wins on Saturday.

Note: Predictions are entered during the week and collected the day before the event. Explanations behind every pick aren’t required and a few authors opt to not do this for their own reasons. By way of instance, if Phil Mackenzie entered all of his predictions on Wednesday without adding in any explanations, he has no idea if he’s going to be the only one siding with a single fighter for any specific fight.
Robert Whittaker vs. Kelvin Gastelum
Anton Tabuena: Two former welterweights fighting for the middleweight belt. Will this convince people that extreme weight cutting really isn’t worth the trade off in performance? Probably not, but this should be a fun bout either way at the least. I believe this will be closer than that which the chances state, but I believe Whittaker is just slightly better just about anywhere, so he should take this. Robert Whittaker by decision.
Mookie Alexander: Gastelum has a chance here. He has powerful hands, insane durability — maybe not Whittaker’s durability is to be scoffed at by any means — and superb cardio. However, he’s not likely to have the ability to take Whittaker down (or at least hold him ), and Whittaker has far more depth to his offensive striking. His leg kicks specifically can slow Gastelum down, and now I believe he cuts angles and combines his attack choice and targets more effectively than Kelvin. It’ll be a close fight through the opening couple of rounds however Whittaker will come on strong in the later rounds and get the win. Robert Whittaker by conclusion.
