NASCAR at Watkins Glen: Odds, stats, bets to consider for road-course race
With Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch taking trophies in the last two Cup Series races, the third member of the”Big 3,” Martin Truex Jr., will feel his period to triumph is this weekend at Watkins Glen International (WGI).
Truex is the defending winner in Watkins Glen and has top-10 finishes in his past two races and seven top 10s in 12 total begins on the road course. Problem is, no driver has accomplished a repeat win at The Glen. Marcos Ambrose, who returned in his native Australia, is the final to win races here in 2011-12.
Harvick kyle Busch and Truex are the 3 favorites not just to hoist the Cup Series trophy in November but also Sunday to win.
Perhaps no one gets as excited about Watkins Glen’s street course as veteran A.J. Allmendinger, who hit his playoff ticket at the track in 2014. This past week allmendinger started to take the checkers.
Allmendinger has six top-10 finishes in his last seven races at The Glen and has achieved the remarkable job of finishing every lap (812) of every race he has competed in there.
Race setup
Distance: 220.5 miles (90 Laps); Stage 1 (Ends on Lap 20), Phase 2 (Ends on Lap 40), Final Phase (Ends on Lap 90).
The track
Watkins Glen, located in upstate New York, is a 7-turn, 2.45-mile street route that recently underwent a repave. While the road-course is very similar to Sonoma Raceway, it is relatively flat with fewer twists, making it a faster route than its California sister.
