Joe Root has to think about giving up the England captaincy to enable him to regain his form according to former Test batsman Rob Key.
Root was out for a duck by using a 2-1 series lead with a success at the first Test at Old Trafford on Sunday before Australia retained the Ashes for the next time in as many matches.
Despite having managed England’s first failure to acquire a house Ashes series since 2001, Root stated that he”definitely” stays the perfect man to lead the negative forward, starting with the fifth and final Test at the Oval on Thursday.
“At some stage, Joe Root has to work out if the captaincy affects his match,” Key told Sky Sports News. “Forget the side and everything else. ‘Can I play as also a captain and a batsman and be successful , in terms of runs, as I have been previously?’
“I think his average before he was 50 and it has since fallen to 40. That is what he has to answer, although that may be because of conditions – and he could answer this.
“Whenever you ask any sportsperson that query about if they would like to continue, they are always likely to say’yes’ right away, otherwise it’s just like giving up – and sportspeople do not like giving up. But at a certain point, Joe Root will need to sit and actually think about whether he would like to carry on and if he can be the batsman he wants to become as a captain.”
Root has 30.87 runs during the series, a figure considerably below his career mark of 48.03, although the astonishing type of Australia’s Steve Smith has further emphasised the England captain’s battles.
The weakness of England’s top-order batting forced Root to promote himself a place out of his favorite No. 4 spot at the beginning of the series, leaving him regularly exposed to some new ball at the palms of Australia’s exceptionally impressive quick bowling lineup.
Root England team-mate Jonathan Trott believes there are a lack of viable alternatives to substitute the 28-year-old, and that accountability for the defeat has to have been shared.
“I would like to see him remain in the function,” Trott told Sky Sports News. “I think there is no better choice in the England side to be captain. I think he’s a pure option.
“I believe he’s looked really very good at times within this sequence. He’s got some great deliveries and he’ll be hurting just a little bit with respect to not having the capability to perform the task and get those Ashes back, however it is a team effort – it’s not just to the captain when he goes out there with the bat. It is up to everyone.
“I believe he’s the perfect guy for the task. If he wants to continue to accomplish this, I had certainly back him.”
