IPF chose Surabaya as the city is recognized to have credible and notable universities in organizing for The 6th ASEAN event series “Bridges-Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace” by inviting Nobel Laureates. Besides Surabaya, the event will be held in Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Denpasar and Bandung.

Why Ubaya chose Prof. Eric Stark Maskin?Ubaya highly recognized Prof. Eric Stark Maskin’ attention towards economic inequality and social injustice. He will talk about global market failures in reducing the economic inequality that enlarges gap between the rich and the poor. The issue should be a challenge for world peace and a concern of all nations. The Bridges event is expected to raise awareness and commitment of businesses and governments, public figures and all parties to collectively active in cultivating the world peace through positive and unselfish economic activities. |
Abstract:
The theory of comparative advantage predicts that, with expanding global markets, income inequality in poorer countries should decrease. To date, however, the international record on inequality is at best mixed in the face of recent globalization. In his keynote speech Professor Maskin will outline an alternative theory that seems more consistent with what has actually happened.
Profile
Prof. Eric Stark Maskin is an American economist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2007 “for having laid the foundations of mechanism design theory”. He taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was the Albert O. Hirschman Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study and a visiting lecturer at Princeton University before becoming the Adams University Professor at Harvard. Professor Maskin has worked in diverse areas of economic theory, such as game theory, the economics of incentives and contract theory. He is particularly well known for his papers on mechanism design/implementation theory and dynamic games. His current research projects include comparing different electoral rules, examining the causes of inequality and studying coalition formation. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Econometric Society and the European Economic Association, and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. He was president of the Econometric Society in 2003.
